Nurses have to be tough :)
I know I hated squirting stuff in our cats ear - but it did finally work - now it's clean as a whistle (no weird black stuff)

My beagle dog had the same / very similar problems, and it turned out she had allergies, and had to be treated accordingly. There is a special blood test they can do to determine the source of the allergies (if any). Hopefully, he won't be allergie to your cats!! It might be worth asking the vet about it.
